These used to be one of the best, if not the best, water shorts around. Heavy nylon material that didn't bleach out in the sun, a sturdy belt with a bomber ladder-lock buckle so you didn't lose the shorts in case you got maytagged in the surf or a big river hole, front mesh pockets for your hands, the back and cargo pockets solid nylon and all with zippers. I used to wear them river running, or take them to Hawaii and wear them body surfing, snorkeling, diving, whatever. They also made great knock-around town or hiking shorts, with plenty of pockets for storage.
The design of the "Snake River II" shorts is an example of the unholy alliance between designers and "suits"- take a proven, popular design and then start milking the name but cutting back on quality; "We'll cut out the zippers here and replace them with cheap velcro, we'll use a cheaper plastic buckle on the belt, we'll use a thinner nylon and cut them tighter...." You get the picture.
I had a pretty good idea from the other reviews this had been done, so I ordered the shorts just to wear around town and walking the dog; I won't wear them in the water. They should have called them the Snake River Minus 2 shorts, for all the quality they took away, or maybe "Good for Walking Your Dog Around Town" shorts.
