Love this coat in cold MN winter!

Loving this coat. I ordered four different ones before deciding this would be the new basic black packable coat for the next few years. The pic on the site doesn't do it justice. I think the pic makes the model look like a black version of the Michelin man. The coat does in fact not make u look like a tower of bike tires. It's very flattering. I am 5'2", 105 lbs and I ordered an xs. If first perfect. When you r this petite it can be really hard to find coats that fit. The sleeves are a little long but the style of the cuff makes that not matter. It's actually nice because when u stretch your arms out, the sleeves still protect your wrists, unlike other coats whose sleeves would ride up. I love the bottom zip-up. I use that all the time. If you choose not to, it could be hard to walk around or get in and out of the car. The material seems pretty touch so far. I was building a fort outside with my kids and poked the bejebes our if myself with tons of sticks but none of them punctured the coat! My last down was ripped and I had to patch it. Hoping this one lasts. Also about the warmth, I live in MN and have already used it in 15-30 degree weather and it's been great. Obviously when it is colder out I wear a sweatshirt underneath it, but it has kept me quite warm, I was surprised! But happy about that. I may not need to buy a heavier coat for the winter! Just a note, the fit is slim, if you don't want a fitted coat, this probably wouldn't work so well.

It's a very comfortable coat, perfect for hiking in 40-60 degree weather where the temp can vary based on the sun, altitude, wind, etc. The coat hits mid thigh so has a nice amount of coverage and the shape of it is great. I do wish there was just a bit more give in the hip area, but it still fits great. I also wear this coat around the city when I'm walking to/from work and it holds up well with the Chicago wind and ever changing weather. The look is casual enough that I can wear it with workout clothes running around or wear it over a nice pair of black jeans and sweater to go to dinner. It's also easily packable so I love bringing it on weekend trips with me. Definitely recommend!

We've been having a series of butt-freezing cold spells that prompted me to think about trying a longer down jacket. The Mineshaft color was very much on sale and I went for it, even though the color didn't look attractive. I can't get that excited about sludge color, but it's fine. Not as shiny as it looks in the picture and not really gray. I'd describe the color as mushroom. I'm 5ft 8in, 140lbs, and I bought the large size to allow for layering. I like how it fits. It hangs well and doesn't make me feel bundled up. The upper arms and shoulders allow plenty of room for driving, without being baggy. The fabric is soft and slightly plastic feeling. Snow and light rain roll off. The pockets are good and deep. The two-way zipper is a nice touch. The cuffs aren't constricting - I hate cuffs that can't be pushed back. For a puffy coat it actually looks flattering.

On the minus side, it lacks refinements such as hood adjustments, but the hood stays up and keeps my ears warm, although the fabric is a bit noisy. No inside pocket. I wish there was a zip garage to keep the cold zipper pull away from my chin when not wearing a scarf.

This coat doesn't look as warm as my shorter, puffier down jacket but it seems to compensate by keeping more of me warm. It is thin enough to be packable but I was comfortable when I added a fleece layer for walking in the teens F. We have very dry air where I live, so the cold is crisp rather than bone-chilling. I know it would not feel so warm in a humid climate. Anyway, I'm happy with it. Compared to other outdoor brands this is a real bargain.

Update winter 2018: If you are looking for a travel coat, this Columbia might not be the right one. Although it is theoretically packable, it takes up rather a lot of space. I often fly with just carryon luggage in winter and ended up buying another long down coat that weighs just 10 oz and packs into a stuffsack the size of a burrito. The Columbia coat's substantial material is what makes it less packable, but more water and snag resistant. It would certainly hold up better long-term for everyday activities such as dog walking and shopping. I hope this is useful information for someone!

I am amazed at how warm this is for being so light and thin. Not a puffy coat at all, yet is as warm, if not warmer, than my older puffy down coat. This is sleek and stylish, with the bonus of keeping me warm and dry. It does repel water, though I've only been out in the rain briefly, not long walks. Also, it does run small in the chest. At the advice of others, I ordered two sizes, my usual size and one up. The smaller one went back, going up one size resulted in it fitting exactly the way it should. I felt it ran small in the chest / shoulder area. Well worth the price!

I purchased this exclusively for travel. Size is true. Love the color I selected. I can wear with neutrals or bright colors. Very light weight, but also warm for my needs. I intentionally wore a tissue tee and leggings on a fairly cool day for my climate. I was warm and had to unzip indoors. I folded it down to see if it would fit comfortably in my backpack and it fits well without adding too much weight. One criticism, I thought it would come with its own packable bag, but it arrived without one. I received a compliment while running around town. I would recommend this for moderately cold climates, but not severely cold climates.

How on earth can anyone make a jacket identified as "puff" when it's flat as a pancake? I took it out of the bag and thought "jeez this is thin" but then thought "well, be patience it just needs to fluff up"

It's got the depth of a cotton towel. No kidding. There's nothing 'puffy' about it and for the cost it's ridiculous. Look to another seller.
